Lahore: Pakistan men’s team head coach Misbah-ul-Haq has stepped down from the role of the chief selector, citing reasons that it was not possible for him to focus on the dual role.
The 46-year-old announced his decision in a press conference at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. He affirmed that he will continue to serve as the head coach of the men’s team.
“I have decided to resign from the role of the chief selector,” said Misbah. “We have ten important tours coming due to which it will be difficult for me to coordinate and focus on domestic cricket and team selections,” he added.
He also refused the rumors that his decision has come after his meeting with Prime Minister Imran Khan regarding the revival of domestic cricket in the country.
“The resignation has nothing to do with meeting Imran Khan or Chairman PCB. If this was the case, I would have resigned from both the posts,” he added.
“It was decided last year with the PCB after taking the charge that I will leave one post when it will become difficult for me to handle both roles,” he maintained.
Misbah further added that the squads for Zimbabwe and New Zealand series will be announced by him. The new chief selector will begin his tenure from December 1.
“Officially I will serve my role until November 30, therefore, I will carry out my selection responsibilities for the home series against Zimbabwe and then for the away series against New Zealand,” he maintained.
Misbah has aimed to progress the men’s team in the top three of all three formats of the game.
“As a coach, the goal is to take the national team among the top three. Two T20 world cups and a 50-over world cup is scheduled to take place till 2021 and we have the potential to win the ICC events,” he maintained.
