NUML celebrates Hangual Day, strengthening ties with Korea

ISLAMABAD: The National University of Modern Languages (NUML) on Wednesday celebrated the 578th Hangeul Day, a momentous occasion marking the creation of the Korean alphabet and recognizing the deep cultural and educational ties between Pakistan and the Republic of Korea.
The event was organized by NUML’s Department of Korean Language and Culture in collaboration with the Islamabad King Sejong Institute and the Seed Program for Korean Studies.
The ceremony, held at the NUML Auditorium, Salam Block, was graced by esteemed guests, including Chief Guest, Jee Eun Seok, Secretary of the Embassy of Korea, DG NUML, Brig Shahzad Munir and prominent members of the Korean and Pakistani communities.
At the outset, the Dean of the Faculty of Languages welcomed attendees with an address that highlighted the importance of cultural exchange and the growing interest in Korean studies at NUML.
In his remarks, DG NUML Brig Shahzad Munir emphasized the historical and evolving ties between the two nations. He noted that the Korean language, which has now spanned 578 years, is among the world’s most influential languages, driven by Korea’s cultural wave and technological advancements. He highlighted the significant global rise of East Asian countries, stating, “The future belongs to education and technology. Korea’s success in fields like technology, where Samsung has surpassed Apple, and the booming automobile industry, are examples of their progress.”
He also recalled the commitment made by the Korean Ambassador during his last visit to provide 100 percent scholarships to NUML students, expressing gratitude for this generous support.
He further added, “NUML is proud to be at the forefront of fostering international understanding through language and culture. Hangeul Day is a testament to our commitment to broadening our students’ horizons.”
Chief guest of the event Jee Eun Seok, Secretary of the Korean Embassy, delivered the message of the Korean Ambassador to Pakistan, His Excellency Park Ki Jun. In his address, Seok underscored the importance of Hangeul Day and its historical significance, highlighting King Sejong the Great’s role in developing the Korean script.
He praised NUML’s efforts in promoting the Korean language, noting that the number of students learning Korean is increasing, thanks to NUML’s dedicated programs. A short documentary was also presented, giving the audience a glimpse into the history and significance of the Hangeul script, which developed as a national treasure under King Sejong.
The event also featured captivating cultural performances, including a vibrant Korean Fan Dance, symbolizing Korea’s rich heritage, and a thrilling Taekwondo demonstration by NUML students, showcasing their skills in the iconic Korean martial arts.
One of the highlights of the celebration was the Korean Calligraphy Competition, with NUML students demonstrating their skills and artistry. DG NUML and the Chief Guest of the event awarded prizes to the winners of the competition.
The celebration of Hangual Day at NUML underscores the university’s dedication to promoting cultural diversity and strengthening Pakistan-Korea relations.
