BEIJING: Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, Director General of the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI), on Thursday voiced Pakistan’s full support for China’s Global Governance Initiative (GGI) during the 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Roundtable Dialogue held in Beijing.
The event, co-organized by the China International Communications Group (CICG), the SCO Secretariat, and the China Institute of International Studies, gathered over 150 representatives from various international organizations, think tanks, and media outlets to discuss global governance and multilateral cooperation.
In his remarks, Ambassador Mahmood acknowledged the pressing challenges facing the international community and emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to the core principles of the GGI.
He noted that the initiative’s call for a more inclusive, democratic, and efficient global governance system aligns closely with Pakistan’s values and strategic interests, particularly in fostering a fairer world order that benefits the Global South.
The GGI, first introduced by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the “SCO Plus” meeting in Tianjin, aims to address the deficiencies in current global governance frameworks by focusing on multilateralism, the upholding of international law, and prioritizing the needs of developing nations.
The initiative advocates for stronger cooperation, peaceful coexistence, and a more equitable international order. Ambassador Mahmood underlined that Pakistan fully supports China’s push for global governance reforms, especially those that seek to enhance the representation of developing countries and strengthen international institutions.
He called on SCO member states to lead the charge in implementing the GGI, ensuring that multilateral frameworks, such as the United Nations, are revitalized to address the pressing issues of today. Chang Bo,President of China International Communications Group (CICG), emphasized the importance of the SCO’s role in fostering global peace and cooperation. He highlighted Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Global Governance Initiative (GGI), which calls for a more inclusive, democratic, and efficient international system.
SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev and other officials, reiterated the SCO’s commitment to multilateralism and international law. The initiative advocates for a people-centered approach to global governance, prioritizing peaceful coexistence, equitable development, and stronger international collaboration.
The dialogue also focused on five key areas of collaboration between SCO member states: strengthening UN-centered multilateralism, reinforcing a normative framework for security, empowering the Global South, fostering innovation partnerships, and promoting cultural dialogue. –Agencies
