Pakistan hailed for hosting IDPs

-UNHCR meets Army Chief at GHQ
RAWALPINDI: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), His Excellency Mr. Filippo Grandi on Thursday acknowledged Pakistan’s effort for hosting four million IDPs (Internationally Displaced Persons) fled from Afghanistan for over four decades.
He commended Pakistan for hosting millions of refugees in a meeting with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa at General Headquarters, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.
The visiting dignitary also appreciated Pakistan’s role in the Afghan situation including the provision of humanitarian aid/ assistance and pledged to play their role for further improvement in cooperation with Pakistan at all levels.
The statement further stated, the matters of mutual interest, regional security, the current situation in Afghanistan and collaboration in humanitarian assistance were discussed during the meeting.
COAS reiterated the need for convergence of global efforts to avert the humanitarian and refugee crisis in Afghanistan. The Army Chief also appreciated the role of UNHCR in promoting UN core values and their response during crises.
Earlier in August, while addressing to young cadets at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) Kakul, the Army Chief said despite paying a “huge price” for the instability in Afghanistan and its own economic challenges, Pakistan had been hosting over three million Afghan refugees for the last four decades, he pointed out.
He had reiterated that Pakistan would continue to play its role for peace and stability in Afghanistan.–ISPR
