ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s commitment to energy efficiency has received international recognition as the country’s ranking score in the World Bank’s review reports witnessed a commendable improvement, ascending from 28 to 36 out of 100, according to the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (NEECA).
This rise in ranking signifies Pakistan’s progress in adopting sustainable energy practices and showcases the government’s dedication to addressing the energy challenges faced by the nation.
As per NEECA, the World Bank’s review reports on energy efficiency provide a comprehensive assessment of countries’ efforts and policies in promoting energy-saving practices.
This also highlights Pakistan’s remarkable strides in the energy sector, reflecting the successful implementation of various initiatives to reduce energy consumption and promote sustainable development. Pakistan’s ascent in the global ranking is an outcome of the government’s multifaceted approach to energy efficiency.
Amid the energy crisis, Pakistan has implemented a range of policies and programs that focus on enhancing energy conservation, promoting renewable energy sources, and improving energy access. These efforts have not only led to a more sustainable energy landscape, but have also positively impacted the economy and the welfare of its citizens.
The government’s commitment to energy efficiency is reflected in its ambitious targets and comprehensive strategies. Pakistan has set a goal to reduce its energy intensity by 30% by 2030, highlighting its determination to optimise energy consumption and minimise waste.
To achieve this objective, the government has introduced the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Policy 2023, which provides a framework for energy efficiency practices across various sectors. Furthermore, Pakistan has invested significantly in renewable energy sources, particularly solar and wind energy.
The policy aims to achieve energy-saving targets of 9 million tons of oil equivalent (MTOE) by 2030, thereby reducing 35 MT CO2 emissions. Through its market-enabling implementation approach, the NEEC policy offers a monetary saving of $6.4 billion per annum to the national exchequer post-2030.
These initiatives not only contribute to the diversification of energy mix but also reduce reliance on fossil fuels, consequently reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
It highlights the progress made in energy efficiency and acknowledges the collective efforts of the government, private sector, and citizens in this endeavour.
