DUBAI: As the world’s attention is focused on the ongoing COP 28 climate change conference being held from Nov. 30 to Dec. 12 in Dubai, Dr. Adnan Arshad, Director of the Climate Change Education Program at Potohar Organization for Development Advocacy (PODA)-Pakistan, attended the event and called for increased collaboration with China to combat the global crisis.
Dr. Adnan Arshad highlighted the need for collective action to address the increasingly urgent challenges posed by climate change. Underscoring the importance of youth climate financing and emphasizing that adaptation must not be left behind, the expert stressed the need for greater collaboration with China, Pakistan’s largest trading partner and a key player in global efforts to tackle climate change.
“China has made significant strides in promoting environmental sustainability. In 2022, the country’s carbon dioxide emission intensity decreased by more than 51 percent from 2005, while the proportion of non-fossil energy consumption reached 17.5%,” he said.
“We need to learn from China’s experiences and strengthen our cooperation to combat this global crisis.”
With excellent progress in developing solar and wind power, electric vehicles, and power batteries, China is a world champion in clean energy and is advancing in the agricultural and water sectors. Climate cooperation between China and Pakistan will bring benefits to both sides, including economic boost, land restoration, food production and value addition, research and technology sharing growth, and new business opportunities.
The expert also highlighted several areas where Pakistan and China can collaborate to address climate change, including knowledge sharing, technology transfer, mutual collaboration in agriculture and the energy sector, and making projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) environmentally friendly. –Agencies
