Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has said his country has secured alternatives to cover its energy needs after a drone attack on Wednesday damaged a gas vessel at Damietta port.
No group has claimed responsibility, and authorities are continuing their investigation, he added.
The attack comes at a critical moment for Egypt’s energy infrastructure. As Houthi attacks disrupt Red Sea shipping and the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed, its Suez Canal and SUMED pipeline have emerged as key rerouting options for Gulf oil bound for Asia, with several tankers already diverting through Egyptian waterways to bypass Bab el-Mandeb entirely.
Any disruption to Egypt’s own energy infrastructure adds a further complication to an already strained regional supply chain, with analysts warning that Suez-based workarounds are costlier and slower than direct routes, but increasingly necessary as both regional chokepoints face security threats. –Agencies
