ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Thursday predicted heatwave-like conditions in the country from May 21-27, with day temperatures expected to soar 4-8 degrees Celsius above normal in Punjab, Sindh, and other parts of the country.
According to the PMD, a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere will lead to heatwave-like conditions in most parts of the country, especially in Punjab and Sindh, from May 21.
The situation is expected to intensify from May 23-27, with temperatures likely to remain 6-8 degrees Celsius above normal in these regions.
In Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Balochistan, day temperatures are expected to remain 4-6 degrees Celsius above normal from May 21-27.
The PMD has also forecast duststorm/thunderstorm-rain in upper parts of the country from May 16-19, with isolated rain expected in various cities, including Quetta, Peshawar, and Islamabad. The department has advised farmers to manage their crops accordingly and the general public to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight. The judicious use of water has also been requested from all aspects of life. The PMD has warned that extreme dry/heatwave conditions may trigger bush fires/forest fires in vulnerable areas of Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Northeast Balochistan. –Agencies
