Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) inaugurated “Aatish,” a solo exhibition featuring the ceramic works of renowned artist Nabahat Lotia, at the National Art Gallery on Tuesday.
The exhibition was officially opened by M. Ayub Jamali, Director General of PNCA, at Gallery No. 3. “Aatish”, meaning “fire” in Urdu presents Nabahat Lotia’s three-decade artistic journey exploring the transformative relationship between clay, fire, and nature.
The exhibition showcases works that embody themes of endurance, change, and renewal.
With 18 solo exhibitions to her credit, Lotia has distinguished herself as both an artist and cultural preservationist. She has worked extensively with traditional potters across Pakistan, documenting and evolving local pottery practices.
Her recent publication, “Pottery Traditions of Pakistan,” chronicles this rich heritage. “Nature is my inspiration, and my work has always been in harmony with it,” Lotia stated at the opening ceremony.
Mariam Ahmed, who curated the exhibition and serves as Director of the Visual Arts Division at PNCA, emphasized the significance of Lotia’s contribution. “Nabahat Lotia’s work is a testament to her dedication to her craft and her deep connection with nature. ‘Aatish’ is a celebration of the transformative power of art and the enduring legacy of Pakistan’s pottery traditions.”
In addition to the exhibition, PNCA will host a three-day Ceramic Workshop led by Nabahat Lotia from November 12-14, 2025, running daily from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
The workshop will provide participants with hands-on experience in ceramic techniques, including kiln firing, with all materials provided.
The exhibition will remain open to the public until November 20 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the National Art Gallery, PNCA, Islamabad. The gallery is closed on Saturdays.
