LAUSANNE: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee are still preparing for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to be held as scheduled and the quota allocation is an urgent problem to tackle, a source with the Olympic movement told Xinhua on Tuesday.
“The IOC and the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee are still making preparations under the idea that the Games will be held as scheduled. The current problem is that the qualifying games can’t be held as planned, therefore more Olympic quota needs to be allocated, and this should be an open, fair and impartial process,” the source said.
“There are still four months before the Tokyo Games, and I believe the pandemic will eventually be overcome and the Games will be held as scheduled,” the source said.
Speaking on reports on Tuesday that several members of the Tokyo 2020 committee agreed to postpone the Olympic Games for one or two years and the proposal may be discussed at an IOC Board Meeting later this month, the source told Xinhua that the position of the IOC has not changed.
The IOC will hold a conference call with International Federations on Tuesday to discuss the allocation of quota among other issues.
