BEIJING: Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, on Monday sent a congratulatory letter to Aung San Suu Kyi, chairperson of Myanmar’s ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party on the NLD’s victory in the general elections held in Myanmar on November 8.
Xi, also Chinese president, said he believes the NLD will achieve greater success in building a prosperous and strong country under the leadership of Aung San Suu Kyi, who is also the state counsellor of Myanmar.
Hailing the “Paukphaw” (fraternal) friendship between the two neighboring countries, Xi noted that this year marks the 70th anniversary of China-Myanmar diplomatic relations.
The Chinese president paid a state visit to Myanmar in January, during which the two countries agreed to jointly build a community with a shared future, opening a new era of bilateral ties.
Xi underscored the mutual support and assistance between the CPC and the NLD and between the two countries in the fight against the COVID-19 outbreak.
The close, friendly interactions between the CPC and the NLD have played an important role in promoting healthy and stable development of China-Myanmar relations, he said, adding that he is willing to make joint efforts with Aung San Suu Kyi to strengthen the two countries’ cooperation in building the Belt and Road and the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor.
The NLD won 920 seats, an absolute majority in Myanmar’s general elections, according to the final result announced by the Union Election Commission on Sunday.
