PTI should not be stopped from protesting in Islamabad: Fazlur Rehman

ISLAMABAD: An opposition delegation called on Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman in Islamabad, with Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, Asad Qaiser, Akhunzada Hussain Yousafzai and other opposition leaders attending the meeting.
JUI-F leaders, including Senator Kamran Murtaza, also participated in the meeting.
Speaking to the media following the meeting, Fazlur Rehman said various proposals had emerged during political consultations, including the possibility of convening an All-Parties Conference (APC) to develop a joint strategy.
Fazlur Rehman said the government had held talks with the opposition, adding that although his party was not part of the negotiations, it had no objection to the dialogue process.
“From what we have heard, the government has not left room for further negotiations in the future,” he said, stressing that political talks should be conducted in a political tone whenever they take place. The JUI-F chief said he wanted the country to move towards a path of political moderation and called for broader consultations among political parties.
He said the proposal for an APC had also been put forward, where the parties could formulate a joint strategy after consultations.
“We are all Pakistanis and stand with the country and the Constitution,” Fazlur Rehman said, adding that the APC would be held with a shared understanding among the participating parties.
Commenting on protests, he said holding long marches was a democratic right.
“We have also held long marches; it is a democratic right,” he said.
Fazlur Rehman added that if the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) wanted to come to Islamabad and stage a protest, it should not be obstructed. –Agencies
