DOHA: Qatar reiterated support for Turkey’s Operation Peace Spring in northern Syria, adding that Ankara only seeks an end to threats on its borders and to bring the Syrian refugees back home.
“We can’t put all the blame on Turkey,” Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman bin Jassim Al Thani said in Doha. He said that Ankara had been forced to respond to an “imminent threat to Turkish security.”
Turkey wants to create a 30-km deep buffer zone along its border with Syria to keep Kurdish forces at bay and send back some of the 3.6 million Syrian refugees on its soil. The Arab League convened an emergency meeting on Oct. 12 to slam the operation and Qatar expressed reservations over its final statement.
