ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan granted the accountability court six more weeks to conclude proceedings in the two references against the Sharif family, according to reports.
The accountability court judge had sought four weeks to wrap up the cases, however, Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar gave an extension of six weeks.
During a hearing of the case on Tuesday, the counsel for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had argued before the court that the judge had already given a verdict in the Avenfield reference and should, therefore, recuse himself from the two other references.
The bench was not convinced with the arguments of Khawaja Haris and noted that it would be difficult for a new judge to the hear the case at this stage.
The chief justice remarked that he did not expect the case to be prejudiced by the judge who was currently conducting the proceedings.
Haris replied that it was unfair of the top court to rule in favour of the judge, to which the CJP replied that attributing unfairness to the SC was tantamount to not serving the country.
In a judgement issued later, the bench noted that the Sharif family could move the application to transfer the case before the judge who was hearing it.
