ISLAMABAD: Chairperson Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Senator Rubina Khalid on Friday said Pakistan Constitution Day is a symbol of national consensus, democratic continuity and the protection of every citizen’s fundamental rights.
She said the 1973 Constitution remained the foundation of justice, equality and the welfare state that Pakistan’s founders envisioned.
In her message, Senator Khalid credited Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto with uniting a fractured nation under a single, unanimously adopted constitutional framework in 1973, describing it as one of the most remarkable achievements in Pakistan’s political history.
She also honored Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, who she said, waged a courageous struggle to restore the Constitution and democracy at a time when both were under grave threat.
Highlighting the Pakistan Peoples Party’s democratic milestones, Senator Khalid said the 18th Constitutional Amendment, passed during the presidency of Asif Ali Zardari, strengthened the parliamentary system and granted provinces the autonomy they had long been denied.
She added that Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari continues to actively advocate for constitutional supremacy, democratic values, and the protection of public rights.
Senator Khalid said the Constitution guarantees every citizen’s fundamental rights, justice, and equality, and that protecting vulnerable segments of society is among its core obligations.
She described the Benazir Income Support Programme as a direct and practical expression of the welfare principles enshrined in the Constitution, adding that the economic empowerment of women remains a top priority fully in line with the constitutional vision.
She stressed that the strength of democracy depends on constitutional supremacy and that every state institution must operate strictly within its constitutional limits. She said Constitution Day serves as a reminder of the nation’s collective responsibility toward the rule of law, national unity, and democratic stability.
She concluded by saying that the Pakistan Peoples Party would continue its mission of safeguarding the Constitution and serving the people of Pakistan.
