DOHA: Sharjah scored five goals in the second half for a convincing 6-0 victory over Al Taawoun FC, moving to the second place in Group C of the 2020 AFC Champions League on Monday.
However, the opener for Sharjah came in the injury time of the first half when winger Saif Rashid received a Coronado free kick and fired his header into the bottom corner.
Only four minutes into the second half, Sharjah displayed their counter attacking skills as Welliton beat the last defender and found the net with his left.
Substitute Mohammed Abdulbasit, who replaced Rashid, made it 3-0 in the 54th minute. Three minutes later, Al Taawoun goalkeeper failed to handle a back pass, allowing Welliton to snatch the ball and finish it into the empty net for Sharjah’s fourth.
In the 61st minute, Coronado made a cross into the near post to Welliton who was on the right position to head home for his hat-trick and Sharjah’s fifth.
Seven minutes later, Caio Lucas added his name to the scoresheet as Sharjah rounded off the scoring.
With their largest-ever win in the AFC Champions League, Sharjah could reach the Round of 16 for the first time in their history if they win against Persepolis in their last game, while Al Taawoun’s fate is now out of their hands as they need a win against Al Duhail and a draw between Sharjah and Persepolis to qualify.
In the other match of Group C, Almoez Ali scored his third goal of the league to help Al Duhail SC beat Persepolis FC 1-0 and overtake the latter to lead the group.
In Group D, Al Sadd SC tied Al Nassr 1-1 and both made it to the Round of 16 after Sepahan settled for a 0-0 draw with Al Ain in Monday’s late match.
