Sherry Rehman condemns India’s Water Aggression, calls it violation of international law & Indus Waters Treaty

ISLAMABAD: Vice President of the Pakistan Peoples Party and Senator Sherry Rehman has strongly condemned India’s move to block the flow of water from the Chenab River and subsequently the Jhelum River, terming it a blatant act of water aggression and a serious threat to regional peace.

In a statement issued on Friday, Senator Sherry Rehman said that India’s actions constitute a clear violation of international law, the Indus Waters Treaty, and the United Nations Charter. She emphasized that the unilateral obstruction or diversion of river waters is unacceptable and undermines established international agreements governing shared water resources.

Sherry Rehman stated that, according to recent United Nations reports, India’s attempts to unilaterally undermine or dismantle the Indus Waters Treaty have been declared unconstitutional and contrary to the principles enshrined in the UN Security Council Charter. She added that these reports have also acknowledged that allegations leveled against Pakistan in the Pahalgam incident are baseless.

“After the facts came to light, India appears to have resorted to water aggression and petty tactics to conceal its embarrassment,” she said. “By relying on a false narrative, India is not only weaponizing water but also holding the peace and stability of the entire region hostage.”

The Senator further stressed that under international law, blocking or diverting the flow of water amounts to an act of war. She noted that the rejection of Indian allegations in UN reports effectively validates Pakistan’s principled stance on the issue.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s position, Sherry Rehman said that the country has made it unequivocally clear that it will not compromise on its legitimate water rights under any circumstances.

“Pakistan will continue to defend its water rights and the truth with a firm and unequivocal stance at every international forum,” she concluded. –Agencies
