CHENGDU: Sichuan Province, a major breadbasket in southwest China, saw its grain output reach 35.27 million tonnes this year, an increase of 285,000 tonnes from the production last year, local authorities said.
The province has managed to sustain the growth in grain output despite the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to its increased grain cultivation area and strengthened field management, according to the Sichuan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
Sichuan’s grain cultivation area increased by 34,000 hectares from last year to reach 6.3 million hectares, official data showed. This year’s per-unit yield stood at 5,587.5 kg per hectare, up 16.5 kg from that in 2019.
Dubbed the “land of abundance,” Sichuan was the biggest grain-producing provincial-region in southwest China in terms of total output last year. –PNP
