ISLAMABAD: A delegation comprising students and faculty members of Karakoram International University Chilas Campus and Degree College Chilas visited the Diamer Basha Dam site on Wednesday.
The inspiring educational journey allowed students and faculty members to witness the ongoing construction progress and activities at the main dam site.
Talking to media Sultan Rahim, a student at Karakoram International University, Chilas said that the purpose of the site visit was to evaluate how the dam and turbine work, and how electricity is generated from the hydropower plants.
“We got the chance to interact with the instructors of the dam to get information about all the major working principles of the construction site. This on-site visit provided us with a tangible link between theoretical knowledge, and its practical implementation, giving us a firsthand glimpse behind the construction of such a monumental infrastructure project,” he said.
Chief Engineer (Diversion Works) Zahid Majeed briefed the students and faculty on the importance of the dam, major targets, and construction activities. Students and faculty members asked questions related to the construction of the dam and its importance and utility.
Speaking on the occasion, the faculty members said that the visit brought awareness of the importance of the dam and the construction progress as the construction of Diamer Basha Dam is the backbone of regional and national development. They also thanked the project management for enabling the visit to the dam site.
Earlier this week Chairman WAPDA Engr Lt Gen (r) Sajjad Ghani, during his visit to the Diamer Basha Dam, directed the projects’ teams to accelerate the construction work, so that both projects including the Dasu hydropower project could be completed by their timelines.
Electricity generation from the Diamer Basha Dam Project is scheduled for completion in 2028. WAPDA successfully diverted the mighty River Indus at the Diamer Basha Dam in December 2023. Once completed, it will proudly hold the title of the world’s highest Roller Compacted Concrete Dam. –Agencies
