‘Sugary drinks major cause of heart disease’

RAWALPINDI: General Secretary of the Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH), Sana Ullah Ghumman has said that Covid 19 is spreading globally and according to medical experts, it is even more dangerous for patients with heart disease, obesity and diabetes, and increases the risk of death.
He said, “One of the main reasons is the use of sweets. Sugar drinks are a bigger source of sweeteners. To reduce its consumption, health levy has to be implemented so that a healthy society can be created and revenue can be increased.â€
Talking to media on Monday, Sana Ullah Ghumman said that the trend of declining consumption of healthy foods has resulted in artificial products, which is causing diseases. The situation in Pakistan is not much different, in this difficult situation of Covid-19, where sterilization and food safety are considered the most important.
He said, “According to medical experts, people suffering from obesity, diabetes, heart problems and diet related diseases have a higher risk of complications and death in Covid 19. Continued use of sugary drinks, which is a major cause of obesity. Obesity is a major cause of other diseases, including heart disease. The use of the term food safety with unhealthy beverages is questionable.â€
Sana Ullah Ghumman said, “We request our government to increase the tax on sugar drinks to generate revenue and to come up with appropriate regulations to discourage advertisements for such unhealthy foods, so that the new generation who are addicted to sugary drinks can be saved.”
