TEHRAN: Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Friday that two tankers struck naval mines while attempting to use what they described as an ‘unauthorised route’ south of the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian state media reported.
The Guards did not identify the vessels or provide details about when the alleged incidents occurred. The claims could not be independently verified.
Iranian authorities have repeatedly warned vessels against using routes through the strategic water-way that Tehran considers unauthorised. In earlier reports this month, the Guards said two oil tankers had caught fire after striking mines, while state media reported that the vessels had switched off their positioning and radar systems. Those earlier reports also lacked independent confirmation. –Agencies
