ISLAMABAD: Dr. Noor Sanauddin, Director of the China Study Center (CSC) at the University of Peshawar, received a cheque of Rs. 4 million from the Embassy of China in Islamabad on Thursday under the annual Chinese Ambassador Scholarships program.
According to data available with media, the University of Peshawar has received Rs. 34.9 million from the Embassy of China since 2018 through the China Study Center.
This includes Rs. 2 million worth of equipment in 2018, Rs. 2 million in scholarships in 2019, Rs. 7 million in scholarships in 2020, and Rs. 23.9 million in Chinese Ambassador Scholarships between 2021 and 2025.
Yearly disbursements under the Ambassador Scholarship program include Rs. 5.4 million in 2021, Rs. 4.5 million in 2022, Rs. 6 million in 2023, Rs. 4 million in 2024, and another Rs. 4 million in 2025.
Speaking to media after receiving the cheque, Dr. Sanauddin said, “We have received Rs. 4 million from the Embassy of China for deserving students of the University of Peshawar.”
He added that while most of this year’s scholarships will go to financially deserving students who struggle to pay their tuition fees, a portion will also be reserved for high-achieving and research-oriented students.
“I have an idea to provide some scholarships on a merit basis to highly intelligent students with strong GPAs,” he explained. “We are encouraging students who are conducting research related to Sino-Pak relations, including CPEC or the BRI, and we will provide scholarships to them as well.”
Sanauddin praised the continued support from the Chinese Embassy. “This kind of scholarship will greatly improve people-to-people relations between China and Pakistan,” he said.
“The friendship, which already exists, will be further strengthened because of this gesture.”
He added that the University of Peshawar is “very lucky to have a fully functional China Study Center along with this kind of scholarship,” noting that 70 to 100 students benefit each year.
“We really appreciate the benevolence and generosity of the Chinese Embassy and the Ambassador,” he said.
