Once again, in what seems like a necessary fortnightly routine, a Pakistani ambassador rang the alarm against the mass repression, violence and the implementation of arbitrary laws by India in IIOJK to the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres. Matters continue to escalate yet, the international community has not interfered in the slightest. With only some ‘deep concerns’ being expressed, the matter is pushed under the rug every single time. At a time when Delhi is becoming a threat to an already unstable region, more is desired from a global community that preaches the values of humanitarianism and justice.
The people of Kashmir are living under an illegitimate BJP-RSS regime that carries out extrajudicial killings, conducts fake search operations, condones censorship, promotes an autocratic rule and is willing to commit crimes against humanity in an attempt to enhance its influence in the area.
Not only has the Indian government looked to cross over into our waters recently through directing its submarine towards Pakistani territory, but it also threatened to carry out surgical strikes against Pakistan. It has also gone the extra mile to intensify the border dispute with China as well. It is acting as an aggressor in the region and is creating a viable enough threat for the international community to clamp down on it and put pressure to de-escalate tensions. In the face of this, the silence and lack of action is alarming.
Far too many times have global actors like the US intervened diplomatically, and directly, to safeguard the rights of the people so its failure to act accordingly in the case of Kashmir is confusing. The Hindutva ideology is seeking to destabilise countries as India forges alliances that allows its actions to go unchecked. This cannot be tolerated any longer and the members of the UN must come to the realisation that their silence speaks volumes to all those Kashmiris that are suffering on an hourly basis.
