Virus cases near 10,000 mark

-Recoveries catch pace above 2,100

ISLAMABAD: The nationwide tally of Covid-19 patients stands at 9,565 with 4,255 cases in Punjab, 3,053 in Sindh, 1,276 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 495 in Balochistan, 281 in Gilgit-Baltistan, 185 in Islamabad and 50 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The virus has claimed at least 198 lives while at least 2,096 coronavirus patients have recovered.
The total number of tests conducted, so far in the country stands at an access of 110886 with 5,347 tests conducted in the last 24 hours, according to the statistics released by the national dashboard. Currently, 6,958 patients are being treated at various hospitals and quarantine facilities across the country.
Earlier on on April 18, highlighting the low number of coronavirus cases recorded across the country, Prime Minister Imran Khan had said that the number of Covid-19 cases could see a spike by the middle of the next month.
Speaking at a media briefing in Islamabad, the premier said there would have been 50,000 cases by April 25 as per initial projections but that is not the case. He added new projections suggest the country will see 12,000 to 15,000 patients.
He was of the view that fighting the pandemic and saving people’s lives is a national duty and should not be hindered by such fake news or politics.
Prime minister Imran Khan also said the government’s taking early decisions and imposing an early lockdown are yielding results. Punjab on Tuesday reported 60 new cases of the coronavirus, taking the provincial tally to 4,255.
A spokesperson for the Primary & Secondary Healthcare Department said 49 people have died from the contagion so far. He added 14 coronavirus patients are struggling for life while 724 have recovered from the disease. The total number of coronavirus cases has soared to 9, 216 in the country with 192 deaths.
Earlier, Sindh reported 289 more cases of the novel coronavirus, raising the total number of patients in the province to 3,053. The Sindh government’s spokesperson, Murtaza Wahab, in a tweet said that the provincial government conducted 2,191 tests over the past 24 hours, out of which 289 came positive.
“Over the last 24 hours, five more people died from the coronavirus in Sindh,” he further said. Sindh has so far reported 66 coronavirus-related deaths with 665 patients recovering from the disease.

Prime Minister Azad Jammu and Kashmir Raja Farooq Haider on Tuesday chaired a special cabinet meeting to mull over suggestions pertaining to coronavirus lockdown and Ramazan, media reported.
The meeting was attended by ministers, chief secretary, Inspector General of Police (IGP) AJK and other top officials. The premier said that 51 cases of coronavirus were reported in the region of which 23 have recovered completely while 28 still battle against the infection. He said that they could decide to ease down the lockdown for a test period while adopting all preventive measures to avoid its outbreak.
Speaking over prayers and other activities during Ramazan, the AJK Prime minister said that they would take a joint decision after consultation with clerics from all school of thoughts.
He said that they could understand the issues faced by daily wagers due to lockdown and urged the masses to help needy people during the holy month. It is pertinent to mention here that the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country has jumped to 9,216 after 796 new infections were reported during the last 24 hours.
According to the government’s statistics, 2,066 patients have recovered from the disease, while 11 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, the death toll currently stands at 192.
