Bishkek: President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov received Representative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan Khrista Pikkat. The press service of the Kyrgyz president reports that the sides discussed issues of further development of cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and UNESCO in the field of education, science, as well as in the field of cultural heritage.
The head of state expressed gratitude to Khrista Pikkat for active interaction and support in the field of preserving cultural heritage at the international level.
Sadyr Zhaparov noted that Kyrgyzstan, having adopted the Convention for the Safeguarding of Tangible and Intangible Cultural Heritage, is making every effort to preserve and enhance it in the world community. “There are about 2,000 immovable monuments in the Kyrgyz Republic that are of particular importance for the national history of the country. So far, four of them are included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List,” he said.
The president also emphasized the significant role of Krista Pikkat in including the Kyrgyz traditional game “Kok Buru” in the UNESCO Representative List for the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, as well as the intellectual and strategic games “Toguz Korgool”or “Toguz Kumalak” and “Mangala”.
“Preservation of objects of historical and cultural heritage is not just the implementation of the code of laws, but our tribute to the great ancestors who created unique monuments of history and culture,” Sadyr Zhaparov said.
Henoted that at present, preparations are underway for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List and the UNESCO Representative List for the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of such objects of Kyrgyzstan as the “Silk Road”: Fergana-Syrdarya Corridor “, one of the elements of which is the Uzgen archaeological and architectural the complex – in the transnational nomination, as well as Rock carvings “Saimaluu-Tash” in the national nomination. These are very important events for Kyrgyzstan that need support from UNESCO, including methodological and grant assistance.
In addition, Sadyr Zhaparov drew attention to the fact that the Kyrgyz Republic is currently preparing the nomination “South Shore of Issyk-Kul” for joining the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.
