Manchester: Chris Woakes (84*) and Jos Buttler (75) led England to a fighting three-wicket victory against Pakistan in the opening Test at Old Trafford.
Woakes and Buttler absorbed immense pressure as they joined the crease when England were reduced to 117-5. The right-handed duo added 139 runs together to take the home side over the victory line.
Pakistani bowlers struggled a lot with just Yasir Shah resisting a bit on day 4. The right-arm leg-spinner took four wickets to become the highest wicket-taker from Pakistan.
England captain Joe Root and opener Don Sibley have added 33 runs after losing Rory Burns early in 277 run-chase at Old Trafford against Pakistan.
Pacer Mohammad Abbas trapped Burns (10) on 22. England are 55/1 at Lunch and need 222 runs to win.
Earlier, England bowled Pakistan out for 169. Pakistan tailenders went all guns blazing and added 32 runs in 2.4 overs. Yasir Shah added 21 runs, smashing three fours and a six whereas Naseem Shah added 8, Mohammad Abbas remained unbeaten on 3.
Yasir (33) was Pakistan’s top scorer in second innings. Asad Shafiq made 29 and Mohammad Rizwan scored crucial 27 yesterday.
For England, Chris Broad and Jofra Archer picked a wicket. Broad finished with 3-37 whereas Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes claimed two wickets each. Dom Bess and James Anderson picked a wicket each.
