Center asks Punjab to form JIT to probe firing incident

ISLAMABAD: The federal government Thursday directed the Punjab government to form a Joint Investigation Team (JIT), to probe the firing incident on the convoy of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) at Wazirabad. In a letter from the interior ministry addressing to the Punjab Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department and Inspector General of Police Government of Punjab Lahore, the federal government directed to form a JIT comprising senior officers of Police and other Law Enforcement Agencies / Intelligence Agencies, to carry out a fair and transparent probe into the incident in the public interest.
The letter states that the Federal Government views this tragic incident with grave concern.
The Government of Punjab is, therefore, advised to constitute a Joint Investigation Team. The letter was issued with the approval of the Minister of Interior, Rana Sanaullah.
Later in a press conference, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah alongside Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb in Islamabad, announced the federal government’s decision to ask Punjab government to form a joint investigation team comprising senior officers to investigate the attack on Imran Khan.
He said the federal government has assured the Punjab government of “assistance of any kind” during the investigation.
Earlier in a tweet, Sanaullah stated “today’s unfortunate firing incident requires a high-level investigation as it is a matter of grave concern. Therefore, the Punjab government should constitute a JIT at the earliest to investigate the matter thoroughly”. –Agencies
