Punjab IGP goes on two weeks leave

From Zeeshan Mirza

LAHORE: The Punjab government on Thursday approved a two-week leave of the Inspector General of Punjab Police Faisal Shahkar.
Punjab IG Faisal Shahkar had asked for a 14-day leave to perform Umrah, which has now been approved. Additional IG Elite police Kanwar Shahrukh has been given the additional charge of the Punjab IG.
In a letter sent to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) and Chief Secretary Punjab on Sunday, the provincial police chief had expressed his inability to continue his current assignments citing “personal reasons”.
“I am writing to convey that due to personal reasons, it is not possible for me to continue on my current assignments. It is; therefore, requested that services may kindly be withdrawn with immediate from Government of the Punjab and placed at the disposal of the Federal Government,” reads the letter.
It merits mention here that after the assassination attempt on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, Faisal Shahkar had refused to continue his services as the Punjab IG.
The Punjab government had suggested three names to the centre for the appointment as Punjab IG on November 8. The names that were sent to the federal government included Fayyaz Ahmed Dev, Aamir Zulfiqar and Ghulam Mehmood Dogar.
He has recently requested the federal government to take back his services as he had refused to work under the Punjab government after an impasse over registering the FIR of the Wazirabad firing incident.
However, Establishment Division rejected his request and asked him to continue serving on the current post before his departure to join the United Nations as a Police adviser.
PML-Q leader Moonis Elahi, son of Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi, held a meeting with PTI Chairman Imran Khan at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, Lahore, on Sunday and discussed matters pertaining to the registration of FIR following an attack on Khan and other party leaders.
