BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping and Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo held talks in Beijing on Tuesday, and the two heads of state agreed to upgrade bilateral ties to a China-Mozambique community with a shared future in the new era.
Chapo is on a state visit to China from April 16 to 22. He arrived in Beijing on Monday after visiting Hunan and Qinghai provinces.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China and Mozambique have built mutual trust and stood by one another, becoming a model of China-Africa friendship and South-South cooperation, Xi noted.
Under the new circumstances, deepening friendly cooperation between China and Mozambique is in line with the common expectations of the two peoples, and also conforms to the trend of strengthening solidarity and cooperation and working together to address challenges in the Global South, he said.
China is willing to work with Mozambique to take the implementation of the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and the 2026 “Year of China-Africa People-to-People Exchanges” as an opportunity to jointly pursue modernization, said the Chinese president.
He called on both sides to continue to support each other on issues involving their core interests and major concerns, strengthen exchanges at all levels and in various fields including governments, political parties, legislative bodies and sub-national regions, and enhance exchanges of experience in party and state governance.
Noting that China and Mozambique enjoy strong economic complementarity and broad cooperation prospects, Xi said China stands ready to work with Mozambique to strengthen the alignment of their development strategies, explore new paths for cooperation in infrastructure and comprehensive development of energy and mineral resources, and actively cultivate new growth points for cooperation in areas such as agriculture, new energy, the digital economy and artificial intelligence (AI) to promote high-quality and sustainable development of practical cooperation between the two countries.
Faced with a complex and volatile international situation, both sides should continue to enhance coordination and cooperation within the United Nations and other institutions, jointly advocate an equal and orderly multi-polar world and inclusive economic globalization that benefits all, and safeguard international fairness and justice, he said.
As the impact of the Middle East conflict spills over to African countries, China stands ready to work hand in hand with Africa to address these challenges, jointly promote peace and work together to advance development, Xi said.
He said both sides should uphold the principles for peace, calling for a ceasefire and an end to hostilities.
Efforts must be made to resolve differences through equal dialogue, promote the international community to practice true multilateralism, and uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the basic norms of international relations, he said.
Xi called for maintaining the resolve for development. Starting May 1 this year, China will fully implement zero-tariff treatment for 53 African countries with which it has diplomatic relations, and further expand market access for African products exported to China through upgrading the “green channel” and other measures, according to Xi.
The Chinese president also urged efforts to promote win-win cooperation. China is willing to respond to the calls of African countries, explore cooperation potential, strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation and assist the development of African countries to jointly build an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era, he said. –The Daily Mail-CGTN news exchange item
