ISLAMABAD: Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Dr Reza Amiri Moghadam, called on Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Yahya Afridi at the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday, where both sides discussed bilateral judicial cooperation, justice sector reforms and matters relating to Iranian prisoners in Pakistan.
The meeting was attended by the Secretary of the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan and senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the meeting, the chief justice highlighted the longstanding religious, cultural and historical ties between Pakistan and Iran, describing the relationship between the two neighbouring countries as one based on mutual respect and brotherhood.
He conveyed good wishes for the people of Iran and expressed hope for their continued peace, stability and prosperity.
The two sides stressed the need for strengthening institutional engagement and judicial cooperation through exchange programmes, capacity-building initiatives and sharing of best practices in judicial administration, court management and justice sector reforms.
The Iranian envoy appreciated the reform measures being undertaken by Pakistan’s judiciary and acknowledged the role of the Supreme Court in upholding the rule of law and strengthening public confidence in judicial institutions.
Dr Reza Amiri Moghadam also thanked the Pakistani judiciary for facilitating the expeditious disposal of cases involving Iranian nationals imprisoned in Pakistan. He noted that several cases had been decided in accordance with the law, resulting in the release of a number of Iranian prisoners.
Chief Justice Yahya Afridi reiterated that the Supreme Court and the judiciary remained committed to ensuring prompt, fair and impartial justice. He assured the ambassador that cases involving foreign nationals, including Iranian prisoners, were being handled strictly in accordance with the law and established judicial procedures. –Agencies
