ISLAMABAD: Former caretaker prime minister and Senator Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has stressed the need for Pakistan to pursue strategic autonomy, independent decision-making and balanced regional ties as the country navigates an increasingly multipolar world.
Speaking at an Eminent Speaker Series hosted by the Institute of Regional Studies (IRS) in Islamabad, Senator Kakar discussed Pakistan’s relations with Iran, Gulf states, China, Afghanistan and India, as well as the growing impact of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies on global power dynamics.
Senator Kakar further noted that Pakistan’s foreign policy should be guided by national interests while maintaining constructive engagement with countries across the region.
He highlighted Pakistan’s evolving relations with Iran and the Gulf states, calling for stronger regional partnerships that could contribute to stability while protecting Pakistan’s strategic and national interests.
He also underscored the importance of dialogue and mediation in addressing regional disputes and reducing tensions, saying sustained diplomatic engagement remained essential in a rapidly changing geopolitical environment. The discussion examined Pakistan’s relations with China, Afghanistan and India, with particular focus on the challenges and opportunities arising from shifting regional alliances and global power structures.
Senator Kakar also spoke about the transformative role of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, noting their potential to reshape economic, strategic and geopolitical competition among states. The Eminent Speaker Series provided a platform for discussion on Pakistan’s foreign policy choices and the country’s strategic options amid the emergence of a more complex and multipolar international order.
